Patriarchy Is Not Men — It Is a System With Roots
A primer on what patriarchy actually means: inheritance of power, control of bodies, and the quiet rules that turn hierarchy into “common sense.”
Patriarchy is often misunderstood as “men being bad.” That framing is useful for trolls and useless for liberation. Patriarchy is a **system** — a set of institutions, norms, and rewards that concentrate authority along gender lines and punish deviation.
The Roots, Not Just the Branches
At its roots, patriarchal order typically rests on a few interlocking claims:
1. **Lineage and property** — Who inherits land, surname, and legitimacy? 2. **Control of sexuality and reproduction** — Whose body is policed, and whose desire is celebrated? 3. **Division of labor** — Who is presumed to care, and who is presumed to lead? 4. **Violence as enforcement** — Physical, sexual, economic, and reputational punishment for stepping out of assigned roles.
When someone says “that’s just how it is,” they are defending these roots as natural rather than historical.
Why “Not All Men” Misses the Point
Individual men can be kind, feminist, and caring — and still benefit from a structure that assumes their authority is default. Individual women can enforce patriarchal rules on other women — through marriage markets, purity culture, and respectability politics. The system is larger than any one person’s vibes.
“A feminist analysis asks not ‘who is nice?’ but ‘who holds power, who pays the cost, and who gets to decide what counts as normal?’”
Anti-Patriarchy as Daily Practice
Dismantling patriarchy is not only protest. It is renegotiating unpaid care, refusing shame around bodily autonomy, naming entitlement, and building kinship that does not require women’s self-erasure.
