Scroll any matrimonial portal and you will find patriarchy’s spreadsheet: height, complexion, salary, caste, “homely,” “convent educated,” “willing to relocate.” Women’s value is itemized; men’s authority is presumed.

Dowry as Structural Violence

Dowry is not “tradition.” It is an economic transfer that treats marriage as a market where women enter at a deficit. Even when families reject cash dowry, soft dowry persists: furniture, appliances, “gifts,” and lifetime unpaid service to the husband’s kin.

Hypergamy Anxiety

The pressure for women to “marry up” — higher caste status, higher income, taller, older — reveals the hierarchy underneath romance. Love is allowed only within approved brackets of power.
