Consent Is Continuous — Not a Checkbox Before Sex
Unpacking rape culture’s myths: silence is not yes, marriage is not perpetual consent, and intoxication is not an invitation.
Rape culture thrives on ambiguity that always resolves in favor of the person with more power. “She didn’t say no.” “They were dating.” “She came upstairs.” These phrases treat consent as a one-time gate pass instead of an ongoing, enthusiastic, revocable agreement.
What Consent Actually Requires
Consent is: - **Freely given** — without coercion, economic threat, blackmail, or social pressure - **Informed** — without deception about identity, protection, or intent - **Specific** — yes to kissing is not yes to everything - **Ongoing** — can be withdrawn at any moment - **Enthusiastic** — absence of resistance is not desire
Marriage Does Not Cancel Autonomy
In many households, marital rape is still culturally denied. The law’s incomplete recognition of bodily autonomy inside marriage is itself a patriarchal root: women as property whose sexual availability is assumed after the wedding ritual.
Building Anti-Rape Culture
Education that teaches boys entitlement and girls silence will keep producing harm. We need curricula, workplace norms, and family conversations that treat bodily autonomy as non-negotiable — including the right to say no to partners, relatives, and “nice guys.”
